Does Dial Up Still Exist?

Dial up internet was one of the first effective forms of using the internet. It has been around since 1965 however it was not used properly until 1989. Users were able to access the internet using public telephone lines and a modem that would allow them to dial into the connection. It was a simple way of accessing the internet as there was no need for any installation, just an accessible telephone line.

You may have noticed that the above has all been spoken in the past tense, dial up internet however is not past tense at all, it is still going strong and used by millions despite the more advanced and popular broadband being available.

There are over 3.5 million people in America alone still using dial up internet so it must count for something right? Although it is slower, less reliable and unable to carry out certain tasks like broadband, it still has its uses and it is still a trusting way of accessing the web. Dial up internet is particularly useful for those living in rural areas. The reason being that big internet providers such as Broadband are unable to send out good enough signals to these areas or the masts are simply too far away. This means that if you are paying for Broadband in such areas you will most likely be paying for a service where you are not raking in the benefits. Dial Up internet however only needs the use of a telephone line ensuring that you do get internet access for your money’s worth.

Another great attribute about dial up is that it is mobile. As long as you have access to a phone line you can connect to the internet no matter where you are. This is great for businessmen or people who travel a lot. The best quality of dial up internet is its cost. Most dial up companies have a pay as you go service allowing you to only pay for the internet you use. This works well for those who do not use the internet on a daily basis and only need it for certain things.

There are of course some disadvantages when it comes to dial up. These include being unable to use the telephone at the same time you are using the internet. Gamers will have no use for dial up as it is too slow to accommodate them, and of course it is much slower than broadband.
